Romantic Era - Impressionism & Realism

Image
Romantic Era -  The Romantic era began approximately in 1770 but its peak period was from 1800 to 1850. This era was all about using their imagination in different forms of art in order to show what’s going on in their life or in the world at the time. So many different art forms are used to express what was going on in the Romantic era, the two styles that I chose is realism and impressionism.  What is Realism? Realism is an artistic movement that began around the 1840s. This art style focuses on accurately creating art that is realistic and truthful. Artists that use realism in their work, their subject is typically about the lower/working class and the struggles that they encounter in order to show a truthful life.  What is Impressionism? Impressionism began in the 1860s, but took off in the 19th century. This type of art is distinguished by small thin brushstrokes and it’s purpose is to highlight light in the painting in order to depict emotion. A great exam...

Classical Art

Overview  Classical art has been around for many many centuries but it really took off in Western civilization as an artistic style expression to different historical landmarks happening like the Reformation, the French Revolution, scientific discoveries happening, and even economic power with different classes being shown through art. I decided I wanted to focus more on art that was created in the 1700’s due to the French Revolution because many beautiful pieces were created from this tragic period.                                                                                                                        The Death of Ma...

Baroque Renaissance Blog

Baroque Art Baroque art is a style of European architecture, art, and music that began in the 1600’s but flourished in the early 17th century. It is inspired by mannerism and characterized by its movement, emotion, illusion, and etc. specific characteristics that you might notice in a Baroque piece of art would be the use of shadowing and color, the type of setting and the emotion/dramatics. The architectural piece of Baroque art that I chose is called, “Apollo and Daphne” by Gian Lorenzo Bernini created from 1622-1625 and it was placed in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, Italy. This piece is inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the story of Apollo and Daphne.  The Story of “Apollo and Daphne”  This is quite a disturbing tale that is about Apollo being struck with Cupid‘s love arrow and seeks out the daughter of the river god, Daphne. His love for her became insufferable and obsessive, it became too much for Daphne so she decided to run away from Apollo’s ruthless love. But yet A...

Renaissance Blog

Overview  The 15th century Italian Renaissance art is characterized specifically by the rebirth of literature, art, as well as philosophy. The most common literature inspired art around this century was Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which is a poem consisting of 15 books that was written in latin 8 C.E. about different mythological stories and many Greek legends about the creation of the universe and death. Many artists from the 15th to the 17th century used this literature to spark creativity through their art and to tell a story. One of my favorite masterpieces from the 15th century Italian renaissance is the “Fall of the Giants” created by Giulio Romano from 1532-1534. This is one beautiful architectural fresco piece created in the City of Mantua, Italy in the Palazzo del Tè where the walls and ceiling are hand painted to look like a mythological apocalyptic catastrophe.  "Fall of the Giants"   Painted by Giulio Romano from 1532 - 1534 The Reformation and Reinvention Era The ...

Laney Millar Art Analysis

Image
This week I decided to review one of my favorite paintings made by Van Gogh, which is "Starry Night Over the Rhone". This piece of art was made in late September of 1888 in Arles, France, but more specifically it was painted by the riverbank of the Rhone river. At first glance of this piece of art I instantly felt so calm and relaxed. The color scheme and the impasto technique where you can see every line I absolutely love. For me, I just imagine myself there in the scenery looking at the reflection of the night sky as it hits the river, followed by the light glowing from the town in the distance, it all just looks so peaceful. My first blog post! ART F200X

Hello! My name is Laney Millar and I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in biological sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am in my junior year of college, hoping I will graduate next year on time... I've switched my major around a few times, but I've always had a love for nature and the outdoors so I think this degree is going to be the best fit for me! I am doing college online since I live in Anchorage. I am part-time working at a local coffee hut called Heavenly Cup. I've been with them for a year and a half, but I've been working in coffee for almost three years! I love my job since I get to be creative when I make drinks, I enjoy the interaction with different customers, and having my routine here makes me feel orderly and organized, which is something I need when I start to feel unproductive. One way I get into my groove working at the coffee hut is by listening to music.      Music for me is the gateway to bein...
