My first blog post! ART F200X

Hello! My name is Laney Millar and I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in biological sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am in my junior year of college, hoping I will graduate next year on time... I've switched my major around a few times, but I've always had a love for nature and the outdoors so I think this degree is going to be the best fit for me! I am doing college online since I live in Anchorage. I am part-time working at a local coffee hut called Heavenly Cup. I've been with them for a year and a half, but I've been working in coffee for almost three years! I love my job since I get to be creative when I make drinks, I enjoy the interaction with different customers, and having my routine here makes me feel orderly and organized, which is something I need when I start to feel unproductive. One way I get into my groove working at the coffee hut is by listening to music.

Music for me is the gateway to being creative and productive. I typically listen to various indie music, pop/RnB, and 90's rock. Each genre gets me pumped up and feeling creative in different ways. For example, I absolutely love to draw and paint. Depending on the type of music I listen to, the emotions I'm feeling while listening to music will be portrayed through my art. I wish I was decent at playing music, I've tried the piano, violin, guitar, drums, and I enjoy messing around with each instrument, but I wouldn't say I'm very good sadly. But I would have to say I put so much respect on people that are talented at playing those instruments and singing. Music is my favorite type of art, although painting and drawing come close, without music I wouldn't feel as creatively inclined to produce art and to be creative.

The photo I am choosing is one of my favorite indie bands called Tame Impala, he's a one man band and most of his songs really inspire me through my art. The video I chose is one of my favorite songs to listen to.

  1. Tame Impala has quite a fan base with my students over the past 2 years. I love what you had to say about how work helped you in organization and giving you that music groove. My husband and I owned a summer time food business in Fairbanks for over 20 years. I miss doing food prep and listening to the radio.

  2. I love that song so much! It is my second favorite song of all time ever and it was first on my spotify wrapped. I am a sophomore in Fairbanks and also switching my major around a lot. I love enjoying the outdoors as well! I feel you so so much on the appreciation of music but lacking in the skills to portray that! I took piano lessons for eight years of my life and I can play about three songs. Overall, you seem super amazing and I love your blog!

  3. Hi Laney, great to meet you and learn about your favorite parts of art! I would argue that making coffee is a work of art, as I have tried and successfully failed. I enjoyed hearing about how music inspires you, and I agree, I think without music the world would feel too quiet. I am unfamiliar with the band, but I listened while watching the music video you posted, and I really enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing!
