Laney Millar Art Analysis

This week I decided to review one of my favorite paintings made by Van Gogh, which is "Starry Night Over the Rhone". This piece of art was made in late September of 1888 in Arles, France, but more specifically it was painted by the riverbank of the Rhone river. At first glance of this piece of art I instantly felt so calm and relaxed. The color scheme and the impasto technique where you can see every line I absolutely love. For me, I just imagine myself there in the scenery looking at the reflection of the night sky as it hits the river, followed by the light glowing from the town in the distance, it all just looks so peaceful.

  1. 2. Hi Laney! I love the piece you chose for your art analysis. The texture is so striking. I feel as if the water is going to wash out of the frame. The color palette of this piece uses complementary colors in a very impactful way. The blue sky, water, and clothing … the soft yellow stars, yet a vibrant yellow for the reflection. I would disagree however about the feeling this painting provokes. I find it a little disturbing rather than calming. What is that couple doing in the water on a foggy evening? I wish you would have elaborated on the impasto technique because I honestly do not know what it is and will google it when I am done commenting. Good job and thank you for introducing me to this piece of artwork.
