Art in Japan - The Woodblock Print

Image
The Edo Period/ Woodblock Prints -  The Edo period lasted from 1603 to 1868. During this time Japan was ruled by a feudal military government called the Tokugawa shogunate. This government controlled the country from the capital, Edo which is now called Tokyo. During the Tokugawa shogunate ruling they divided their people into four classes which were the samurai, farmers, artisans, and merchants. Due to this division and specifically having merchants as one of the four classes, that caused this country to create A nationwide trade and commerce market system that allowed merchants to sell and receive goods in order to create their own businesses and grow within the social hierarchy. Well now that the market system is booming, what could we sell? Well that’s when Japanese woodblock prints also known as ukiyo-e prints became a popular selling item. These prints became a hot item within the market because now that people had money to spend on entertainment and activities, these Japanese wo

Post Modern Era - The Influence of Celebrities/Pop Culture

Image
What is Postmodern Art?  Postmodern art is an artistic genre that came from the late 19th century/20th century. During this era the focus shifted to incorporating different elements of mass media, pop culture, social hierarchy, etc. You also might find underlying issues like gender, race, class, and many more political, economic and social concerns of this century. The most common art forms would be through paintings and sculptures, but during this era photographs and cinematic videos became a popular source of digital art. The reason why postmodern art is heavily influenced by pop culture is because of the rise of social media/consumer culture. Through those elements many people identified themselves with what they were watching online on advertisements, television shows, and eventually social media would enter the picture. So for that reason artists felt that it was important to portray the effect of the media through their art. In my personal opinion I believe that these three art

Romantic Era - Impressionism & Realism

Image
Romantic Era -  The Romantic era began approximately in 1770 but its peak period was from 1800 to 1850. This era was all about using their imagination in different forms of art in order to show what’s going on in their life or in the world at the time. So many different art forms are used to express what was going on in the Romantic era, the two styles that I chose is realism and impressionism.  What is Realism? Realism is an artistic movement that began around the 1840s. This art style focuses on accurately creating art that is realistic and truthful. Artists that use realism in their work, their subject is typically about the lower/working class and the struggles that they encounter in order to show a truthful life.  What is Impressionism? Impressionism began in the 1860s, but took off in the 19th century. This type of art is distinguished by small thin brushstrokes and it’s purpose is to highlight light in the painting in order to depict emotion. A great example of a paint

Classical Art

Overview  Classical art has been around for many many centuries but it really took off in Western civilization as an artistic style expression to different historical landmarks happening like the Reformation, the French Revolution, scientific discoveries happening, and even economic power with different classes being shown through art. I decided I wanted to focus more on art that was created in the 1700’s due to the French Revolution because many beautiful pieces were created from this tragic period.                                                                                                                        The Death of Marat The Death of Marat was created by Jacques Louis David in 1793 and it currently resides in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium. David created this painting as a tribute to his passed friend Jean-Paul Marat who was assassinated by Charlotte Corday who was given entrance of his home in order to tell him dirt on enemies of the revolution. But instead w

Baroque Art Baroque art is a style of European architecture, art, and music that began in the 1600’s but flourished in the early 17th century. It is inspired by mannerism and characterized by its movement, emotion, illusion, and etc. specific characteristics that you might notice in a Baroque piece of art would be the use of shadowing and color, the type of setting and the emotion/dramatics. The architectural piece of Baroque art that I chose is called, “Apollo and Daphne” by Gian Lorenzo Bernini created from 1622-1625 and it was placed in the Borghese Gallery in Rome, Italy. This piece is inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the story of Apollo and Daphne.  The Story of “Apollo and Daphne”  This is quite a disturbing tale that is about Apollo being struck with Cupid‘s love arrow and seeks out the daughter of the river god, Daphne. His love for her became insufferable and obsessive, it became too much for Daphne so she decided to run away from Apollo’s ruthless love. But yet Apollo wou

Overview  The 15th century Italian Renaissance art is characterized specifically by the rebirth of literature, art, as well as philosophy. The most common literature inspired art around this century was Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which is a poem consisting of 15 books that was written in latin 8 C.E. about different mythological stories and many Greek legends about the creation of the universe and death. Many artists from the 15th to the 17th century used this literature to spark creativity through their art and to tell a story. One of my favorite masterpieces from the 15th century Italian renaissance is the “Fall of the Giants” created by Giulio Romano from 1532-1534. This is one beautiful architectural fresco piece created in the City of Mantua, Italy in the Palazzo del Tè where the walls and ceiling are hand painted to look like a mythological apocalyptic catastrophe.  "Fall of the Giants"   Painted by Giulio Romano from 1532 - 1534 The Reformation and Reinvention Era The Rein
